Attack of the Blob

My lava lamp, when it gets warmed up, tends to have all the wax stay in one lump at the top of the lamp, rather than circulating in smaller lumps to create the typical lava lamp look. A little disappointing.
Not really that good

I purchased this lamp as a present for a friend. The lamp arrived in a timely manner, but after that, things went downhill. It took several tries over a period of multiple days to get the lava to function as it should (ie, not lay stuck in one large clump at the bottom of the lamp). Also, the solution the lava is in is very cloudy which means it's not very nice to look at. However, the customer service department at LAMPS PLUS is very friendly and really helpful.
It's a Lava Lamp, give it a break.

Yes, the fluid in this is cloudy from day 1. Solution: don't put it on a white background! Jeez, folks, it's not that big a deal!

What is a big deal is that the lava motion of this lava lamp doesn't work after a few weeks. I've read on the forums that this is a very common issue with no real good solution.

Well here's what I found to get around it: The bulb they give you is a 25 watt refrigerator bulb. This is too hot. Put in a 10 watt. It takes longer to heat up (about 3-4 hours longer), but it works once heated.

Sometimes the wax will get stuck at the bottom. Even though they tell you not to, shaking the lava lamp will correct this for about 3-4 days of use. A lot of people are probably reading this and thinking it's stupid, but honestly, the fluid is so cloudy in the first place that it's really not made way too much cloudier by the shaking. Most of the cloudiness will settle out after a few hours too.

One last tip: the heating coil is a big problem too. For some reason, the wax will start to adhere to it and won't do the lava motion after a while. Turning the lava lamp such that the coil is flipped over is a good solution to this.

If you were really ambitious, you could drain the fluid and replace it with something less dense (maybe an alcohol?), then reseal it. You could also change out the coil, if you were so inclined. I thought about doing this, but it's really okay as long as you do the steps above.

All in all, you get what you pay for, and you're only paying $29.99 for a pretty cool-looking lava lamp.
Not really black lava

Obviously you have to leave the lamp on for a little while to get it warmed up so the lava flows right. The only thing I was disappointed with was that the lava wasn't very black. It's more of a silver/grey color. It works perfectly though, bright, lava flows nicely, fun to watch.

THIS LAVA LITE SUCKS, THE WATER IS SO MERKEY YOU CANNOT EVEN SEE THE LAVA BALLS.
IT WAS SUPPOSED HAVE CLEAR WATER BUT IT IS ALMOST YELLOW. NOT AT ALL WHAT THEY
ADVERTISE.
I WAS VERY DISSAPOINTED.
Should be called a "blob" lite

Good news, it arrived promptly. Bad news, one of the light bulbs was broken. I bought two of these so I have a bit more experience than one-offs. If you are into instant gratification, forget it. These lamps take over an hour to warm up to get any lava (more like a big blob) action. I tried to replace the 25 watt bulb with a 40 watt bulb (not recommended by the manufacturer). Well, it did warm up a lot faster but the lamp got extremely hot - I went back to the 25 watt bulb. The lava flow is just a big blob that floats to the top, stays there for many minutes (about 5-10) and blobs back to the bottom. Not alot of flowing going on. Oh, well, what should I have expected for $14 each. There has to be a better product out there. Oh, and the liquid is "merky." Maybe it supposed to be that way for better light refraction. The add says Red/Clear. It should say Red/Merky.
Not what I expected.

The lava isn't as bright as it is in the pictures and it takes about and hour and a half to two hours to actually warm up enough to work properly. Overall, disappointing.
